Meanwhile, I keep reading the newest from authors whose books I give an average of three stars. Why dont I spend that time instead on the authors who top my TBR list, whose books just might blow my mind? In 2019, as I strive to be more intentional with all my reading choices, here are five authors I’m finally going to read. No, really. I said it on the internet, so now I have to do it. 1) Zadie Smith In my senior year of college, I bought a copy of White Teeth,  thinking it would be a nice contemporary break from the classics I was assigned as an English major. But all the wishful thinking in the world couldnt motivate me to pick up the 480-page tome while I was in the midst of completing two capstone projects. Now three years later, Zadie Smith fans are materializing all around meâ€"friends and colleagues dive into conversations about her mastery of the third person omniscient voice, and I have nothing to contribute except, “Yeah, I’ve been meaning to read her for a while.” Now I’m finally gonna do it. I was briefly introduced to her work back in 2012 when the TA for my intro to creative writing class had us read aloud a passage of The Beet Queen. I don’t remember what he was illustrating with the book, but the writing struck me enough that for years I looked for it at used bookstores. Fast forward to 2018; after learning about the accusations of sexual misconduct against Sherman Alexie, I realized how few other Native authors I’d readâ€"Leslie Marmon Silko and N. Scott Momaday were all who came to mind. So I sought out the work of more contemporary indigenous writers, reading recent debuts by Tommy Orange, Terese Marie Mailhot, and Tommy Pico. Yet I’ve still been neglecting Erdrich, whos published dozens of books. Its time to finally fix that. What I’m starting with: Love Medicine, her debut, which precedes  The Beet Queen in an 8-book series. 3) Stephen King Stephen King’s book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft  has been recommended to me by everyone from my high school English teacher to strangers on the internet. I havent picked it up yet, though, because it feels weird to take writing advice from someone whose writing I’ve never read. Obviously he is among the most prolific and wealthiest authors  alive today, but I want to see for myself if I like him before I read his memoir. Though I tend to shy away from horror, I branched out into several new genres with last years Read Harder challenge, so what the heckâ€"it’s time to give it a try. What I’m starting with: Carrie? Misery? I have no idea. If you have a favorite King book in mind for the horror-shy, leave me a rec! (Bonus points if its shortâ€"something like  It  just isnt going to happen.) 4) Sarah Dessen I’ve been a fan of YA for over a decade, but Ive never read anything by Sarah Dessen. Shes a quintessential YA novelist known for her romances. Back when I fit the target audience, though, I was too shy to even tell my friends about the guys I was crushing on let alone do anything about it. As a result, I avoided YA romance, because it seemed like something I should be able to relate to but couldn’t. Now that I have some distance between me and my teenage self, I’ve started venturing into contemporary YA love stories like Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and My So-Called Bollywood Life. Now I think it’s time to go back and give Dessen a chance. Plus when I heard the news that she’s switching publishers to join the progressive list at HarperCollins Balzer + Brayâ€"the imprint that published  The Hate U Give  and  Dumplinâ€"I was reminded that she’s not just old news. What I’m starting with: The Truth about Forever. 5) Rebecca Solnit I went from knowing absolutely nothing about Rebecca Solnit to hearing her name everywhere in one year flat. After adding  A Field Guide to Getting Lost to my TBR last May, I suddenly noticed all my Book Riot peers were referencing her. Her political essays on Lit Hub caught my attention, and half my friends seemed to have a copy of  Men Explain Things to Me on their bookshelves. She’s become a remarkably large part of my literary consciousness considering I’ve never read any of her books. This time I’m going to jump on the bandwagon now rather than leave her on my TBR for years. What I’m starting with: A Field Guide to Getting Lost, which was conveniently just announced as the next pick in the Life’s Library book club (run by John Green and Rosianna Halse Rojas). Double-blind randomized controlled trial cannot occur without the use of controlled random groups as they make the double-blinding possible (Schulz Grimes, 2002). Concerning Love by Anton Chekhov - 1055 Words

Anton Chekhov’s Concerning Love is exactly that, a short story concerning the love that both Alyokhin and Anna Luganovich feel for each other but never act upon. The love started when Alyokhin took up a part-time job in town as the honorary justice of peace. Through his work he met Anna’s husband, Dmitry Luganovich, who invited Alyokhin back to his house for dinner. Alyokhin immediately took a strong liking towards Anna, â€Å"†¦here was a young, beautiful, kind, intelligent, enchanting woman, unlike any I’d met before† (148). However, he failed to act on his love for Anna because â€Å"judging from little details† he â€Å"†¦concluded that they [Anna and her husband] were living peacefully and happily† (148), a happy married life with children yet,†¦show more content†¦Therefore they went on concealing their love for one another and letting it tear themselves up inside. Likewise, Anna was thinking would her love for Alyokhin make him happy and thinking of the family she had made with Luganovich and how distressing everything would be. They both knew they loved each other but were fatally holding back, â€Å"†¦through some lack of mutual understanding we would always say goodbye and part like strangers† (152). Alyokhin and Anna’s love for each other ultimately drive them to misery. Anna becomes depressive and ill ultimately because she and Alyokhin s love went unfulfilled and she had no desire for her life. The two lovers were in a case, a case of which neither of them wanted to conquer their love for each other and transgress the social order. Anna grew very bitter to Alyokhin out of anger for not enacting on his love for her even though she did not act upon it either. At last when it is too late and Anna is moving away for treatment, the two lovers finally embrace. This knowledge was obtained by the Arabs who later spread it to Europe. Also two centuries earlier, they were already using natural gas as a means for heating. They were even able to transport and store it after a few innovations. And even more amazing is the fact that around the same time, someone in China already thought of the first law of Newton and defined a circle properly as shown by Mo-ist writings (Wright, 41). Then, in 14th century BC, they were already using the decimal system and already understood and used the concept of a zero. The compass and crossbow also came from the Chinese. In addition, they were also the first ones to use chemical and poison gas as weapons in battle (Wright, 42). Early Imperial China During early imperial China, around 221 BC to AD 589, technological innovations in China did not cease. The Chinese were probably the first ones to use the power of rivers and streams and the waterwheel to produce power (Wright, 64). The fact that they already had this technology during that time is already amazing. Then add the fact that they actually used this to power huge bellows for iron-casting (Wright, 64). When I imagine the movies I watch were there are medieval blacksmiths, all I can visualize are the smiths themselves or their assistants doing the bellows work. The Chinese were also the first ones to use suspension bridges. It wasn’t really a flat passage then because the â€Å"bridge followed the curved contours of the suspended rope. † (Wright, 64) But later, the Chinese were able to remedy this after their invention and use of iron-chain suspension techniques1. Then, when they first invented paper, the first kind they made were so durable, rough and hard it was not only used for writing but also for clothing, light armor, mosquito nets, and curtains (Wright 65). They were also the first ones to develop the stirrups for horses in third century AD (Wright 65) and invent and use a seismograph (Wright 66). They did the latter around 1040s, four hundred years earlier than Gutenberg’s invention, but did not make further efforts on it since it was impractical to use due to the thousand individual characters present in the Chinese writing. Then, they also made the first working mechanical clock and Mercator map projections (Wright 96). In addition, the Chinese made the first vaccines against smallpox and the first phosphorescent paintings (Wright 97). Spread of the science and technology outside China From the study of world history, one can determine that there are a number of factors responsible for how a certain country is today. For example, trade between people and countries in the early times were an important source not only of livelihood but also of science and technology. Knowledge, customs and cultures can also be spread to a certain area of the world via, ironically, war or conquests and religious activity. For a number of the inventions and innovations of the Chinese, some were spread to other parts of the world, both intentionally and unintentionally, probably by trading with other people and war. For example, despite efforts of the Chinese to prohibit its spread, the crossbow and secret of papermaking still spread anyway. Especially, the papermaking techniques, which was said to have been guarded by the Chinese for centuries, were supposedly shared to the Arabs when those who knew it became prisoners after the Tang dynasty were defeated by Arab armies (Wright 65). Then, there are the stirrups that were probably shared with Westerners by the Avars, whom the Chinese also knew (Wright 66). For the most part, it was revealed that Europe, the Arabs and the countries near China, Korea and Japan, were the beneficiaries of the science and technology of China. For example, for Europe, it was probably because it was then the superpower of the world. From world history, up until World War II, Europe had a lot of Asian colonies and having read parts of the history of China, it can be seen that Europe was interested in China as well. After all, it repeatedly tried to have both a friendly and not-so-friendly relationship with China. As for the Arabs, they were basically known to be desert nomads and thus it is not impossible for them to have been to China and traded with them. And since there also came a point in Arabic history that they were able to build their own dynasty that spread by conquering in Asia, they must have been to China as well and tried to conquer parts of it. And of course, Korea and Japan are just neighboring countries of China. Eighteenth century to the present China Unfortunately, I was unable to find more technological inventions or innovations that the Chinese have made during this time. As Bodde mentions in his book, it is indeed puzzling that the Chinese did not have the same scientific and technological revolution that really changed Europe and the rest of the Western world (3). After all, the Chinese did have a civilization that had existed for so long and produced so many useful inventions and technology that are actually the groundwork of today’s advancing science and technology way before the Westerners did. To think that if the Chinese continued on with their work, it is interesting to think where they would be at this point in time. Would they be the superpower instead of America? But as Bodde writes, such decline may have something to do with the mindset of the Chinese during that time. After all, the Chinese do adhere to their Confucian beliefs which are opposed to war and competition (3). Then, there’s also the Taoist distrust of innovative technology (4). The social aspect was probably partly a reason for the decline. Or maybe, as Bodde said, the Chinese recognized the hazards of an advanced technology (4). After all, technology is like a double-edged sword. It is capable of defending one’s self and at the same time attacking others. Technology can help man have an easier life but it could also be used for his destruction. One of China’s most important inventions: Gunpowder Speaking of technology that had been used both for the good and bad of mankind, we’ll now talk about gunpowder. It’s probably weird to say that it was actually used for the good of mankind when it has been primarily and most efficiently used in war. Well, according to Embree, the Chinese weren’t looking for gunpowder when they discovered it during the Tang dynasty. In actuality, they were in search of a pill that could fight aging (849) and prolong life, in short, a form of the fabled elixir of life. The product was able to treat some skin diseases, fevers and ringworm. Its recipe was even included in some pharmacology texts. They called it huoyao, or firedrug, because of its explosive tendencies that led to fire in the alchemists’ laboratories. It was then later used for firecrackers and blasting and thus, its military applications were immediately realized. Conclusion It is ironic that the Taoists, who are known for their practices in prolonging the lives of its devotees, were the ones who produced the gunpowder which was able to do the exact opposite. As mentioned earlier, its application was mainly in the military that used it to make bombs, grenades and cannons. Earlier designs of cannons used bamboo barrels. But they were probably able to improve it since bronze cannons that date back to 1332 were unearthed and are now at the Chinese History Museum. However, it was also discovered that as early as 1128, metal bombards were already used. Then, gunpowder was also used for its rocket-propelling capabilities which the Chinese used to develop â€Å". . . more than thirty different kinds of fire-arrows designed to rain down on the enemy, explode, and catch everything around on fire. † (Embree 850) The invention of gunpowder did not have as much impact to Chinese society as its introduction to the Western world did. After all, with gunpowder, Europe was able to move out of its medieval era via destroying the frontiers of the feudal castles that ruled it then and establishing a monarchy. This monarchy then further utilized gunpowder to strengthen and stabilize its position in Europe. It was later on innovated and used in guns and artillery and as the years go on in bombs, grenades, and everything else that explodes. But with the Chinese, the gunpowder did not have such an impact, as mentioned. Embree adds that it was because during the Tang dynasty, China was already a united empire and thus did not have feudal castles to destroy like the Europeans. Of course, the Chinese did not want to share the gunpowder and the other things they invented or innovated with it. What country would? However, they were unable to stop its spread. After using it to fend off invaders like the Jurchen from forests in the northeast and the Mongols, the Chinese still lost to them anyway in 1127 and 1234, respectively. China and used gunpowder against the Southern Song, the Japanese, and kingdoms in Southeast Asia. † (Embree 850) As for the spread of gunpowder to the west, the Arabs are certainly not the ones responsible, even if it appeared suddenly in Italy during the fourteenth century. Embree quotes an article by Lynn White, Jr. titled â€Å"Tibet, India, and Malaya as Sources of Western Medieval Technology. † Although the article does not explicitly mention gunpowder, what he says in his article is a probable explanation of how at least the technology of gunpowder suddenly appeared in Italy. White explains that it might be because of the slave trade in Italy. Since the Muslim slaves were gruff and almost always escaped and due to canonical prohibitions, the Genoese merchants thought of securing slaves from central Asia and made it the main source of slaves. It is not impossible for the Genoese merchants to do this since they are known to have been the first Europeans to have traded with the Mongolians, Russians and the Chinese (Embree 853). In addition, the slaves that were sold were of both sexes and were relatively old enough to have accurate memories of their own homelands. A study on the records of the slaves also revealed that the majority of the slaves came from areas near Tibet and China (Embree 852). Thus, it certainly implies that the technology of the gunpowder may have been carried through to Italy and into the Western world by the Asian slaves. And gunpowder is still relevant today as the other inventions that the Chinese came up with centuries ago. In connection with that though, the thought of what the world might have been today if it was the Chinese who did it continues to bug the mind. Anyway, it certainly seems that after a long rest, the Chinese government is taking steps to revive its scientific community. China has now established its new science and technology management system that integrates science and technology with industrial and agriculture production. And with their opening up policy, its scientists and engineers concentrated on the world’s advanced level of scientific and technological development. The Importance of Answering Questions in Complete Sentences In language arts lessons, elementary school students learn that writing allows them to communicate ideas. But to do it effectively, they must understand the essential  elements of good writing.  This begins with sentence structure and unambiguous language that readers can easily comprehend. Some young students can find writing laborious. So, they often subconsciously rely on clipped answers in response to a writing prompt. For example, in a getting-to-know-you exercise at the beginning of the school year, you may ask your students to write answers to a few questions: What is your favorite food? What is your favorite color? What kind of pet do you have? Without instruction, the answers will likely come back as pizza, pink, or dog. Explain the Importance Now you can demonstrate to your students how, without context, those answers could mean something different than the writer intended. For instance, pizza could be the answer to any number of questions, such as: What did you have for lunch? What food do you hate? What food does your mother never let you eat? Teach students to answer questions in complete sentences to add detail and accuracy to their writing. Show them how to use keywords in the question itself as a cue when formulating their answer. Teachers refer to this technique as putting the question in the answer or turning the question around. Then, ask students to identify the keywords in this question. You can help the class target them by asking the students to think about what information the answer to the question should  provide. In this case, its the name of our school. Now demonstrate to students that when you answer a question in a complete sentence, you use the keywords you identified from the question in your answer. Next, ask students to come up with another question. Assign one student to write the question on the board or overhead and another to underline the keywords. Is Killing And Letting Die The Same Thing? It should be clear, I think, that kill and let die are too blunt to be useful tools for the solving of this problem  [1]  . The problem he is referring to is we tend to think that killing and letting have completely different perceptions. Thomson tries to give more details and explanation that killing and letting die might be the same thing whether we wish to believe it or not. She tries of explains this using the trolley problem, which raises the issue of killing and letting die. The distinction between killing and letting die appears to be a specific case of the more general distinction between doing harm and allowing harm. But this is not quite right; most cases of killing involve doing harm, and most cases of letting die involve allowing harm. However, there are cases in which death is not harm, and therefore in which killing does not involve doing harm. There is case in which a continued life involves overwhelming suffering; death may be benefit to the sufferer. It follows that even if doing harm is morally worse, in itself, than allowing harm. And the question arises from the trolley problem whether you should kill one person or kill five persons. Most people would agree that killing one persons and letting five live is more rational. While others would think that they should not do anything, which is let the trolley go through and kill five workers. The most significant argument on this would be towards the deontological position which says that every person is an end in it self and not just a mean to an end. But it can be insulting to consider the one person on the track as a mean to an end, which in this case to save five lives. For argument sake let us agree that killing is worse than letting die; and also let us say that if you allow someone to die, you could have prevented it from happening, you are not responsible for the death of that one person. In this case, it wouldnt be considered insulting to allow five people to die; it can also assume that they were going to die anyway, and you are not the cause of their dea ths. But on the other hand, it would be disrespectful to kill that one person to save the lives of five individuals, because you are causing the death directly. Given the scenario, it is not clear whether killing is worst that letting die, it can even be seen as being the same thing, allowing harm and killing. It can be seen that, the trolley problem is somewhat confusing since no matter which option you choose, you would be responsible for the death of at least one person. So It can clearly been seen that, it does not matter what you do because either option you would be treating someone as a means rather than an end. It can also be argued that it is better to be respectful to a larger amount of rational beings than to fewer, therefore you can kill one rather than let five die, everything else is the same in bother instances. Considering our moral duty, whether in the case of letting die is considered the same as killing. In the scenario with the bystander Thompson states to come to a solution with solving the Trolley problem we should focus on the concept of rights, focusing on the relationship between the bystanders and the one he would harm in his efforts to save the five. Basically, she is recommending that despite the fact the bystander is going to be treated wrongfully the persons life she is about to be sacrificed. Whichever way the bystander chooses to intervenes to save the five lives by hitting a switch and diverting the trolley which is violating the rights of the other person. While the bystander may become hero for saving the five workmen by hitting the switch, at the same time she might be an assailant in respect to the person being sacrificed. Therefore, why wouldnt it be morally allowable for the one person to protect himself against any da nger that is threatening his life? Thomson states if are in a position, if you do not kill someone, it they will bring about your death instead, it can justifiable in killing them first whether they are going to kill you knowingly, purposely, or cruelly. Thompson said, once we agree that he is about to violate your right and that you can prevent this only by killing him it seems right to conclude that he no longer has a right that you not kill him. In concluding, Thomson solution to the problem says the workman would be justified if he shot and killed the bystander at the switch if it became clear that she was going to divert the trolley. But if justified self-defense requires a potential impermissible rights and the workman is justified in defending himself from the decisions and actions of the bystander, then it follows that the bystanders decision to sacrifice the lone workman is impermissible after all.
